Read MoreA School Of Bunker Fish 9/7/21
I was walking along the Ocean Grove boardwalk the other morning when I saw many fish jumping out of the water just past the rock jetties. It seemed there was a whole school of fish trying to evade some predators in the ocean. I had my drone backpack on me and decided to send it up and see if I could get a better view...and boy did I.
There was a school of hundreds of thousands of bunker fish staying together in a tight formation. The formation of fish (some call it a “bait ball”) was as big as a football field and was constantly changing shape to protect themselves. Occasionally a hole would emerge in the formation with fish quickly jumping out of the way of some predator. I thought I would have seen some dolphin or maybe a whale, but I didn't see any predators.
It was an amazing thing to witness just a few hundred feet into the ocean, something I will never forget.
